Dragon in the Yard!

If you’ve been reading my posts here, you would definitely know how much trouble I go through to get dragonfly shots much of the time. I think they are incredible creatures and find it well worth it. Well sometimes you get lucky and can get images with much less work.

The photos running in the slide show here are the perfect example.

It was car wash day at the house, although at that moment I was, if I remember correctly, writing a post here on this blog. Suddenly, I was notified to get my butt out to the driveway to photograph this Flame Skimmer. In the interest of moving fast I just grabbed my 1dIII and 180mm macro. After photographing him for a while and seeing he was pretty tolerant as long as I approached him very slowly, I decided to go get my flash rig.

About half of the images here are from that phase.

Things at this point were going so smoothly that I decided to grab my camcorder and make some video footage of him hunting from the antenna. The encounter only ended when I determined that I had made just about every image I could think of and went back to my other work.

Sometimes you just get lucky.

Take a closer look at these Flame Skimmer Images. Look at some of my other Odonata images. Look at my Macro Portfolio.

Tomorrow is Nature Photography Day!!!

This year, my plan is definitely to celebrate it. I haven’t been able to for the past few years due to day job considerations. Now, this is my day job!

My plan is to celebrate it by getting back to the sort of photography that was the primary inspiration to my book, Insects in a Flash, by going on a dragon hunting expedition. In other words, I will be photographing dragonflies at Freeway Ponds Park in Albany, Oregon. This is an unassuming park, but it sure can produce the cool dragon images.

So get out there, and do something yourself to celebrate Nature Photography Day. Then come back here or to my Facebook page and share with us what you did.

Homemade Macro Flash Diffusers

Recently, I began experimenting with a homemade system for diffusing flash for macro photography. This system probably isn’t as good as a system you would purchase, but it does a good job for almost no cost.

I usually use two speedlights in my insect photography so I made two of these. Take frosted white, plastic, freezer containers and cut a slit in them that will allow the head of your speedlight to fit snugly inside. Rig these up on your macro flash bracket and balance the ambient light one to two stops darker. I manually set my exposure (usually) to 1/200 sec at f/16 and then vary the ISO to balance with the ambient light.

The attached image is my favorite done this way. I’d love to hear what you think.

Thanks to Dragonflies and Damselflies of Oregon by Cary Kerst and Steve Gordon, I found this wonderful place to photograph dragonflies.  In addition to having the information you need to id odonates in Oregon, this book also has a guide to 30 great locations for dragonflying in Oregon. Freeway Ponds Park in Albany is one of the locations. It is literally right next to I5.

There is a wide variety of dragonflies at this locale in large numbers. Town is nearby for lunch break. The only downside is that water access is a bit difficult and you will probably need to sit in pond muck to get the shots. Honestly, if you’re passionate about the photography the worst thing here is that the muck is quite slippery and keeping your balance while moving into position is quite difficult.

This spot is accessed by taking the exit for highway 20 off of I5. Then travel down Three Lakes Road until you find the spot.
